Zhang Xiaofu began to study music at the
age of five and entered the
Orchestra of the Changchun Opera House
at 16 to play basson and erhu,
(chinese traditional instrument) later
to conduct and compose. He studied
composition with Porf. Wu Zuqiang in
the Central Conservatory of Music of China
in Beijing from 1977 to 1983, received
his BA and the deploma of composition,
and, after his graduation, taught composition
and harmony there. He became a member
of the Association of Musicians of China
in 1984. In 1988 he was sent by
the Chinese Ministry of Culture to study
in France. He studied contemporary
music and electro-acoustic music with
Yoshihisa Taira, Ivo Malec and Jean Schwarz
in the Ecole Normale de Musique de Paris,
the Conservatoire National Superieur de
Musique de Paris, and the Conservatoire
Edgar Varese, and obtained the Diplome
Superieur de Composition (ENMP) and the
Diplome Superieur de composition Electroacoustique
(CEV). He also participated in the
master classes of Boulez, Stockhausen
and Denisov. In 1992 he became a
member of the Societe des Auteurs, Compositeurs
et Editeurs de Musique a Paris,
and began to work in La Muse en Circuit
as the first Chinese composer being invited.
Meanwhile, he accepted the invitation
and did some researches in the INA-GRM
and the IRCAM. Zhang Xiaofu returned
to China in july 1993, then founded the
Center of Electroacoustic Music of China
in the Central Conservatory. In
October 1994, he organized the First
Conference on Electro-acoustic Music and
`94 Musicacoustica in Beijing successfully,
and gave a Concert of Electro-acoustic
Music, which is the first in China and
arouses extensive interest.
Zhang Xiaofu has composed all kinds of
music: orchestral music, chamber music,
music for traditional chinese instruments,
art songs, choruses, contemporary music,
electro-acoustic music, pop music, film
and television music, incedental music,
theatrical dance music ... His
priciple works have won prizes in China,
France, Japan, Italy, Canada and Taiwan.
